Maharajas Express

Young Joydip Mitra may not have travelled abroad even once, yet he is familiar with the quirks and preferences of people from a host of nationalities better than the most consummate tour guide.
Mitra is on board the Maharajas Express, a pan- Indian luxury train.
As a butler for the train's $ 5,000- a- night presidential suite Mitra knows his high- flying guests rather too well. The presidential suite, which is under his charge, occupies an entire coach and comes with white marble flooring, rosewood wardrobes, handcrafted furniture with intricate ivory inlays and a panoramic window offering a glimpse of the hurtling world outside. The 20 deluxe cabins and 22 other suites also don't fall short in the departments of good looks and luxury. The crockery and cutlery are 24- carat gold- plated at the Mayur Mahal restaurant and water comes from a purification plant on the train.
" High- end luxury is a rarity and you cannot afford to make your guests unhappy," assures Arup Sen, Director, Royale India Tours, a joint venture between the IRCTC and tour operator Cox and Kings, which owns the train.

PM, Wife Pledge Do Donate Eyes

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur Thursday pledged to donate their eyes -- on the occasion of National Eye Donation Day.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Manmohan Singh and Gursharan Kaur signed a form to this effect.
The couple said in a joint statement: 'We are aware that there are innumerable corneal blind patients in our country for whom the gift of sight will be a priceless one.
'We hope that people across the country will rise to the occasion and support the National Programme for Control of Blindness and help their fellow brethren.'
They also lauded the National Eye Bank and corneal transplantation teams at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here and across the country for their efforts to illuminate the lives to those in need.
According to the World Health Organisation, there are 284 million visually impaired people in the world -- 39 million are blind and 245 have low vision.
About 90 percent of them live in developing countries.
Eye donation means donating one's corneas after his or her death. In India, there are many organisations that act as eye banks that facilitate removal of corneas and distribute them to the needy.
Cornea is a clear tissue -- a focusing element -- that covers the front of the eye. People suffering from corneal blindness only can benefit from eye donations through corneal grafting.
State run telecom companies BSNL and MTNL have a toll free number 1919 all over the country to facilitate easy access to the nearest eye bank.

GE Hopes To Double German Business

On Tuesday, GE plans to announce its full German management team, an expansion of facilities including its Munich-based research center and a German marketing campaign, as the company tries to gain market share in the world's fourth-largest economy that is now dominated by Siemens , the paper said.

"Germany has always been the engine and the locomotive of the European economy. One of the things we have to do is improve our position there," Beccalli-Falco told the Journal in an interview.
Beccalli-Falco sees strong potential in energy, health care and finance, and expects to add 400 to 500 jobs in the process, according to the newspaper.

Profits Elude Bankers

Ajay Piramal is just the sort of big fish every Indian private banker would love to land. With businesses from healthcare to glass and property, the 56-year-old Piramal has a net worth of $1.4 billion, according to Forbes, good for 39th on its India rich list.
The problem, at least for the swelling ranks of wealth managers in India, is that Piramal doesn't need them, putting his millions instead in his own companies and real estate ventures.
"These are only two areas I invest in, and therefore we don't need any advisor," said Piramal, who is approached by private bankers "all the time".
India may be minting millionaires, but that is failing to translate to profits for the banks that have set up teams of well-dressed, well-paid bankers to help manage those riches.
A narrow product range, rising competition, falling advisory fees and billions of dollars in wealth hidden from tax officials has stifled profits for private banks, which have aggressively ramped up operations in India.
At the same time, expenses -- mostly salaries -- are growing by as much as 20 percent a year, some in the industry say, meaning many private banks must absorb potentially heavy running costs for years before they are profitable.
The industry's difficulties in India come as more established wealth management centres in Hong Kong, Singapore and elsewhere are buffeted by poor markets.
Profit margin pressure on the sector that serves the wealthy is "partly driven by a plain vanilla product platform available for clients," said Atul Singh, head of global wealth and investment management for India at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, among the biggest players in the country.
The challenge is made greater by poor market performance, with Indian shares sliding about 17 percent this year. A spate of scandals embroiling the country's business and political elite has also soured sentiment among the rich.
The tough conditions are exacting a toll, even as many banks such as Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and Bank of America Merrill Lynch continue to add staff, with an eye to the long-term potential of the fast-growing economy.
Credit Suisse, one of the largest global private banks and a player in India since 2008, is cutting its India wealth management staff by 12 people, or 20 percent, as part of a global reduction, sources said last month.
Credit Suisse is unlikely to be the last to trim staff over the medium term, industry players said.
For graphic on global wealthy population, India ranking, click http://link.reuters.com/ber43s
A dearth of fee-spinning alternate investment vehicles such as hedge funds and private equity, a $200,000 cap on overseas investments by onshore Indians, and an underdeveloped corporate bond market means most investments are channelled into run-of-the-mill equity products, bank deposits, and government bonds.
Investments in exotic assets such as art and wine are rare in India. Instead, the homegrown rich keep their money in real estate and gold, which doesn't require the services of polished bankers of the sort that cater to the rich in places like London, New York, Zurich and Singapore.
"When product platforms are largely undifferentiated, then prices get driven down," Singh told Reuters. "Making money is certainly tough for players in the sector, especially ones without scale."
Many tycoons like Azim Premji, chairman of No. 3 IT services exporter Wipro and the third-richest person in India, with net worth estimated by Forbes at $16.8 billion, thus prefer to use in-house staff to manage personal wealth.
In neighbouring China, wealth managers also contend with tight regulations and limited product offerings, but they also face less domestic competition. Many rich mainland Chinese invest in real estate or stash their wealth in Hong Hong or Singapore, which are thriving private banking centres.
Many of the richest Indians also have substantial wealth overseas and do their private banking in Singapore, Zurich, London or Dubai, where there are more investment options and where some banks cater specifically to non-resident Indians.
FEE AND COST PRESSURE
Private banks in India charge between zero and 0.5 percent advisory fees to wealthy clients, which barely covers costs for smaller players, compared to about 0.5 percent to 2 percent in more developed markets, industry insiders say.
Pressure on fees and rising costs have dragged down most wealth management firms' margins to 40-50 basis points now from 1-2 percent a few years back, they said.
The gradual shift from charging transaction-based fees to an advisory fee model, amid a global move to discourage selling of risky exotic instruments, has added to margin pressure.
"No one is making money in private banking in India," said the head of India wealth management at a U.S. bank. "Margins are so very low here because very few people want to pay money for advice and your cost of operations is going up."
To woo clients, some banks will send the adult children of entreprenuers for short training courses at U.S. universities on preserving and growing family wealth, giving them an opportunity to rub shoulders with the sons and daughters of rich Americans.
Closer to home, private banks coddle prospective and would-be customers with wine tastings and live music and dance performances by Bollywood stars.
In 2010, the population of high net worth individuals -- those with more than $1 million in investable assets -- rose nearly 21 percent in India to 153,000 -- making it the 12th largest such market, ahead of Spain and just behind Brazil, according to a report by Capgemini and Merrill Lynch.
BLACK MONEY
A large chunk of Indian wealth goes undeclared. Tax authorities say billions of dollars in funds have been deposited by Indians in Swiss bank accounts and other tax havens.
A government panel in 2009 found Indian illicit funds to range between $500 billion and $1.4 trillion, which is now nearly the size of India's economy. Global Financial Integrity, a Washington-based think-tank, estimated illicit outflows of about $16 billion a year from 2002-2006.
Technology consultancy firm Cognizant said in a report that the Indian wealth management sector in the short-term would remain fragmented with a large number of brokers, financial advisors, insurance agents and tax consultants offering services.
Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, Kotak Mahindra, and HSBC were cited by Cognizant as strong players in the sector in India because of their reach, potential for cross-selling banking products and focus on domestic equities.
Big banks that have yet to take the full plunge on Indian private banking may end up looking prescient, or lucky.
UBS, a global leader in private banking, is in the early stages of providing onshore wealth management services in India.
Goldman Sachs' private wealth management arm serves high net worth Indians from Singapore but does not have an onshore presence in India, while JPMorgan has pushed back plans to launch onshore services to late 2012, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Rising salaries, poaching of talent and wafer-thin margins have made it tougher for smaller home-grown wealth managers to compete with the global rivals.
However, while Western banks bring brand cachet and global expertise, they also tend to be saddled with higher costs.
"Some level of consolidation will have to happen in the next year or so. Pure broking businesses will find it difficult to continue because costs are rising and margins are under pressure," said Tashwinder Singh, head of Citi's private bank in India.

Decorate A Mirror With Wine Corks And Bottle Caps

I'm always on the lookout for ideas to recycle and reuse items and make recycled crafts. Over the years, I use to throw away wine corks and beer bottle caps after opening bottles until one day, when I had a pile on the kitchen counter, I thought how nice they looked all together. Many beer bottle caps have colorful patterns on them and wine corks are imprinted with the vineyard's name down the side. I thought, I'd love to find ways to decorate with them! Decorating a mirror was the first item that I created. My article will teach you how to decorate a mirror with wine corks and bottle caps. Its a terrific gift idea for men and women and you'll be thrilled that you could reuse these corks and caps instead of just throwing them away! Ours hangs in our foyer by our front door for all to see!

Reuse Used Stamps

If you have a used stamp collection, why not decorate with them? Stamps are beautiful as well as interesting! If you've collected them over the years and aren't sure what to do with them, consider this craft idea that will create a beautiful decoration for your home.

Instructions

To start decorating your mirror, you'll need a towel or drop cloth spread out on a flat surface for your work space. Lay your mirror flat on top of the towel. Take the time to wipe down your mirror's frame before you begin so that it is free from dust and dirt. To keep the cost of this project down, look around your house for a mirror with a frame that you could reuse for this project.
In the mean time, you can decide where you would like to place your wine corks. You have a few options with the corks. You could line them along the outside of the frame. You could place them on the inside of the frame. Refer to my photo. They can be adhered whole or you can alter them in some way. This is the part where you have to be really careful. Wine corks can be cut in half lengthways or little slices all the way down the cork into small discs. I'd advise using an electric knife and using protective gloves to be safe. Using a kitchen steak knife can be really dangerous. Wine corks are tough to cut through.
Prior to adhering anything with glue, I would advise you to lay out all of your beer bottle caps and wine corks first. Start with your bottle caps. Take time in arranging your beer bottle caps on the frame of the mirror. When you have your pattern and are happy with the look, begin to glue each bottle cap in place. Leave the mirror dry for a few hours.

Careers Are Overrated

Now that Barack Obama has fixed the American economy, Anna Hazare has defeated Indian corruption, and the BCCI has created a sensible league format for the IPL, we can turn our attention to the remaining, smaller problems, that we can solve on our own without having to rely on these superhuman people. I suggest we start with the problem that plagues so many of us: our jobs.
This is something that most people don't realise when they start - but their careers are going to be a source of frustration for them. There are the day-to-day issues, like dealing with HR, the commute to your job, and the food in the canteen. But there are also larger, more philosophical problems. About six months into your career, you start thinking "Am I really cut out for this? Should I be doing something else? Is this meaningful?"
And then you realise that you have EMIs to pay and resign yourself to your job.
Did I say that? What I meant to say was: and then you gain self-confidence, start kicking ass at your job and realise that you are actually pretty good at it. But that only lasts so often. Four years after the six month itch, you get the five-year itch, where you realise that you the problem isn't that you're not good enough, it's that your job is boring. You wonder: is cross-checking cash vouchers and material received notes all there is to life? Will you ever move beyond sewerage consultancy reports? How much analysis can you subject a liability portfolio to, anyway? Once upon a time, writing code or selling soap had seemed glamorous and world-changing. Now, it is prosaic. And every year, more and more people feel this way.
The problem actually starts in our childhoods, when our parents and teachers keep insisting that we get high-paying or prestigious jobs, preferably both. Television and movies do their best to convince us to become cricketers, actors, or reality TV stars instead; but they are powerless in the face of relatives, authority figures, and motivational speakers. Here, your parents tell you to crack IIT or AIIMS. There, Chetan Bhagat tells you to fulfill your potential and become an entrepreneur. Eventually, you follow that path, and by the time you're thirty, you're staring at burnout, wondering what the hell you can do that is actually interesting.
Nobody is safe, no matter how interesting the job or how good the pay. My friend Kodhi, who always wanted to sell fast moving consumer goods, is doing just that, and is being paid very well to do it. Even so, he wishes for something more adventurous and exciting - though to be fair, maybe he would be happy if he found someone adventurous and exciting.
We need a solution to counteract all this motivation and push towards achievement, which just ends up giving us boring jobs. So here is my proposal: a support group for people who are fed up with the corporate life and are figuring out what they should do instead. It's the opposite of career consulting - this is anti-career consulting, which encourages you and gives you guidance on how to enter jobs that society looks down upon, but which are actually more fulfilling. These jobs include:

House-husband

Lots of people look down on women who stay at home instead of working, but in India you'll find even more people who insist that they must stay at home and be housewives - Sathya Sai Baba, for example. On the other hand, almost everyone agrees that a man should under no circumstances be the home manager.
You know what? To blazes with them. If you're so fed up with the corporate life that all you want to do is stay home and do the actual physical work while your wife's salary provides the money to run the household, anti-career consultants will help you do it. This will include training modules on ironing, cooking, and laundry segregation, and also motivational talks on how to endure the ridicule of society. These may include videos of Goong, a Korean TV series where the heroine's father is a house-husband who does the dusting in a pink apron, while his wife goes around selling insurance. You should watch it even if you aren't planning to become a house-husband, actually.

Poker Player

There are many unsavoury professions, where you make lots of money, and where you can also pretend that you're doing something noble. For example, entering government employment meant you collected lots of bribes while passing it off as serving the public (up until yesterday when Anna Hazare vapourised corruption with sheer will power), being a urologist involves seeing diseased penises day in and day out but you can still talk about how healing the sick is your calling, and being an entrepreneur means endless hassles but you get praised for creating jobs.
Being a poker player doesn't even have that advantage. All your winnings are being taken from other people, so you can't claim that you're creating wealth - it's just being shifted around. Polite company, informed that you make your money hustling newbies at gambling, will look askance.
For this anti-career path, the support group will train you in both poker and public speaking, so that you can skilfully convince everyone that your time is being well spent.

Kept Woman

I would like to assure my female readers that I haven't forgotten that they face career boredom as well. They can't be house-husbands, but there is something they can be that draws similar censure: kept women. They will be relieved to know that the censure isn't completely unmitigated: the Supreme Court of India does approve of keeps.
With support from both the judiciary and anti-career counselors, high-flying women executives will learn how to stop being high-flying women executives and be languorous ladies of leisure instead. Unfortunately, I can't speak from personal experience here, but I think a training module would include this movie at the very least. Oh, and a friendly reminder that Kodhi, mentioned above, is rich, funny, and single.

Wall Decoration

Usually, lighting is of two different types. One is general lighting, which is the most common type of lighting that includes chandelier, ceiling lights, and other main sources of lighting. The other is ambient lighting, which is more of accent light that includes a table lamp or wall sconce.
Wall sconces come in several styles. They can be hard wired, or can have a cord that can be plug in. Keeping these options in mind, you can easily make a permanent lighting fixture in your home or you can move it around such as a table lamp. The use of a dimmer switch is one of the options that can make this type of lighting fixture very versatile and multi-purpose. This will let you to dim or brighten a room to fulfill your lighting needs.
Before the invention of electricity, a candle wall sconce was used for lighting a home. But, today they are used almost in every space in home, such as using wall sconces outdoor. Outdoor wall sconces are a great way to accent the exterior of your home. There is a little difference between the exterior wall sconces and the interior wall sconces. The exterior ones are typically all sealed up in order to protect them from the environmental elements. However, they have the same great function of the interior lighting fixture.
The versatility of all the different styles and finishes of the wall sconces is one thing that also makes them a great lighting choice. Their variety ranges from elegant traditional designs to stylish modern designs. They can be made from materials such s metal, copper, wrought iron, glass, ceramic, and Tiffany stained glass.
A wall sconce has become a great choice as accent lighting over a table lamp, especially when you have small kids in your home as they are cordless that toddlers and kids could play with.
Therefore, when it comes to wall sconces, it does not matter the budget or style that you are looking for as they can be a great and affordable choice for your home.

Make Best Out Of The Waste

In the present world where we have cutthroat competition in almost all the fields, it is difficult to survive as a common man! You got to have something that is extraordinary or something so special. This 'special factor' should come right from the childhood and if you have missed this feel-good factor, let us now try onto your kid so that they do not suffer the challenges as you might have in your past life!
Let us learn how to make best out of the waste! The idea behind this is very simple – to make something that is creative and can draw everybody's attention. Generally, schools and colleges are coming up with such projects that make pupils learn how to make best out of the waste!
To create something, the pupil should have enthusiasm. This can be developed by encouraging the spirit of doing something new, exciting! Parents and friends play major role in this. Let your kid understand that everything waste is not actually waste and it can be used to make things best.
Simple example is the ice-candy sticks. They can simply be collected and made into some shape –maybe a ship or some tree. Likewise, you can also collect some marbles and gift wrapper pieces that can be very useful in decorating XMas Tree.
There are many things you can make out of waste match-sticks. You can make dolls, ships, animals etc out of matchsticks using glue or any adhesive. Do not throw out your used copies and notebooks. Use the papers to make something creative. You can make innumerable items out of papers such as an artificial snowman, decoration on the walls on some festivals and birthday parties etc.
You can also use your old clothes and other apparels to make Halloween Costumes. You can simply paint them all black with some funny characters on apparels and masks to make the festival enjoyable and exciting.
The creativity lies in your sight and you are the one who needs to use it, keep going, and keep celebrating your waste making best!
